Black Hospital Marker Meeting

A comminuty meeting has been scheduled to begin to formulate plans for a historic marker to commemorate the former American National Thrift Association Hospital (A.N.T.A) and its founder Dr. Richard Samuel Hughs (1882-1943). The meeting, which is open to the public, is Friday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Howard Academy Comminty Center, 306 NW 7th Avenue in Ocala. For more details please contact Craig Hughs at (202) 236-4914 or email craig.hughs@dc.gov

In 1925, Dr. R.S. Hughs, a 1905 graduate of Meharry Medical College, opened A.N.T.A Hospital. Located on West Broadway Street and Pine Street. The hospital had a 90 bed capacity. It closed in June 1943.

The signifiance and contributions of the A.N.T.A. Hospital during the Jim Crow era cannot be overstated. The number of lives saved or how many recovered there can never be fully known.
